Although it’s tempting to think all zebras look alike, each has a unique pattern of stripes, and zebras use these patterns to tell one another apart. Naturalists think the stripes confuse predators, a necessity in the zebra’s African grassland home, where lions and hyenas prowl.

  • History: All three types of zebras are native to Africa, where they live in the east and south. Although they reside mostly in grasslands, some zebras make their homes in woodlands or even mountains. Related to horses and donkeys, zebras live in family groups of a male, several females, and offspring, but family groups often combine into massive herds for protection.
  • Scientific Name: Equus quagga
  • Characteristics: Liven up an Africa project or use these zebras as classroom giveaways or party favors. They make great cupcake toppers too.
  • Size: White with black stripes, or maybe black with white stripes, these paperclip length zebras (about 1 inch long) are full of fun.

    Eli A. ★★★★★

The variety of stripe patterns on these little zebras is incredible—I spent a good twenty minutes just sorting them by how different each one looks. My kid uses them to play out zoo scenes and they’ve held up to some rough handling so far.

Opening the box and seeing all 192 tiny zebras lined up was surprisingly satisfying—each one really does have a unique stripe pattern. I’ve been using them as little educational props for my kids to talk about animal camouflage, and they’re perfect for that. The detail on such small figures is impre

I was a bit skeptical that 192 tiny zebras would all look identical, but each one actually has a truly unique stripe pattern. They're great for sorting activities with my kids, and we love trying to find the one with the most distinct markings.
