Emperor Penguins live in about 40 colonies on the entire coast of Antarctica, where they must survive some of the harshest weather on the planet. Four layers of small feathers help keep out the wind, and their social nature provides more warmth and protection.

  • History: Emperor Penguins have a complex scientific name - Aptenodytes means featherless diver. Penguins do have feathers of course, just not the large easily distinguished feathers of flying birds. Forsteri comes from naturalist J.R. Forster, who accompanied Captain James Cook on his sea voyage past Antarctica in the late 1700s. Although Cook and his crew didn’t land on Antarctica, Forster did spot and describe Emperor Penguins, giving him the honor of naming the species.
  • Scientific Name: Aptenodytes forsteri
  • Characteristics: These stately Emperor Penguins are all dressed up for a party. Invite them to yours, perhaps as cupcake toppers or decorations, or use them in Antarctica or ocean projects.
  • Size: These tiny Emperor Penguin figures pack in the realism, capturing the classic black and white and even the yellow tinge near the chin. The stand nearly one inch tall.

    Eli H. ★★★★★

These little penguins are even cuter in person than in the photos—the four layers of tiny feathers are just barely visible under a magnifying glass. I’ve already spent a good 20 minutes just admiring the detail on their beaks and feet.

    James I. ★★★★★

I was surprised how crisp the detail is on these tiny penguins—each one clearly shows the different feather layers. They fit perfectly in my palm and the puzzle was a fun little challenge for a rainy afternoon.

    Mia ★★★★★

The four layers of tiny feathers on these little guys are so detailed you can almost see how they’d survive Antarctica’s winds. I’ve been sorting through all 192 and each one has a slightly different pose—it’s oddly relaxing, and they’re perfect for my desk at work.
