When people think of dairy cows, they often imagine a passive black-and-white creature, and for good reasons. Holsteins, with their distinctive black-and-white markings are far and away the most prodigious milk producers in the United States.

  • History: Migrants traveling through Europe 2000 years ago came across what would eventually become the Netherlands, a cold, northern country with limited natural resources. They needed a cow that could survive and thrive in that setting, so they bred types together, the black Batavians and the white Friesians, for their ability to produce a great deal of milk from limited feed. The black-and-white breed became known as Holsteins, and the productive cows finally made their way to the U.S. in 1852 aboard a Dutch ship.
  • Scientific Name: Bos taurus
  • Characteristics: These gentle dairy cows would look pretty good grazing away on top of cupcakes and in a birthday giveaway bag. Use them in miniature farm scenes as well.
  • Size: Classic black-and-white Holstein Cows are about the size of a playing die, around an inch long.

    Ellie ★★★★★

These are just the right size for my daughter's farm play set, and the 192 count means we won't run out. The black-and-white markings are crisp and detailed, so they're actually fun to sort by pattern.

    Michael ★★★★★

I love how each tiny cow has its own unique black-and-white pattern—makes them feel like little collectibles. These are perfect for sprinkling around the house as whimsical decorations, and the 192-piece box gives you plenty to share.

    Samuel I. ★★★★★

I grabbed a few boxes as party favors and was honestly surprised how crisp the black-and-white markings are on each tiny Holstein. The 192-piece count means I had plenty to spread around, and they’ve held up well through some rough play without chipping.
