The name Hippopotamus means River Horse, and Hippos truly do love the water. In fact, if one looks at a map of rivers in sub-Saharan Africa, one is also looking at the range of Hippos. They spend much of their days in the water and are never far from it.

  • History: Although Hippos no longer live in the lower Nile areas of Egypt, the massive beasts were once important elements of Ancient Egyptian culture. The relationship was complicated, however. On one hand, Hippos lived in the life-giving Nile River, so they received honor and respect and were seen as symbols of rebirth...but on the other hand, Hippos were dangerous. and would eat newly planted wheat, overturn ships, and were all around quite deadly.
  • Scientific Name: Hippopotamus amphibius
  • Characteristics: Mouth open wide in a smile or grunt, these lifelike Hippos can be the life of the party. Use them in Africa or Egypt lessons or as part of miniature Nile River scenes.
  • Size: These realistic Hippo mini figures are about the size of a gumball, around an inch long.

I wasn't sure how many to expect, but 192 pieces is a generous count for the price. These little hippo minis are the perfect size for decorating a small terrarium I'm building.

Opened the box and there they were—192 tiny river horses just chilling, and the water-lover detail in the description totally checks out. I've already scattered a few on my desk and they make me smile every time.

    Eli N. ★★★★★

These little hippos are surprisingly detailed for their size, and the river horse theme is a fun conversation starter. I opened a pack to sprinkle around the house for a bit of whimsy, and the sheer number in the box is fantastic. It’s a clever, joyful little product that brought a smile to my face.
