Hermit Crabs just love their shells. But they don’t get attached, because as they grow, the soft-bellied crabs need to swap out their borrowed homes for new shells, allowing a smaller crab to take the used abode. This real estate bargain takes place in coastal waters worldwide.

  • History: Crabs predate dinosaurs - they’ve survived several mass extinctions and continue to flourish today. The group to which crabs belong, crustaceans, stretches back to the early Cambrian period, a time when the vast majority of phyla existing today first made their appearance. The crab extended family tree, then, is wide and tall, stretching back to the warm seas and including creatures as diverse as lobsters, shrimp, and spiders.
  • Scientific Name: Pagurus berhardus
  • Characteristics: Looking fine in their borrowed shells, these Hermit Crabs are ready to join an ocean-themed party or school unit as giveaways, study tools, or prizes.
  • Size: These mini Hermit Crab figures are about an inch long. Imagine putting some legs on a large blueberry to get a sense of the size.

    Henry S. ★★★★★

The different shell sizes and designs in this set make it genuinely engaging to watch the crabs swap homes as they grow, and the box itself feels like a tiny ecosystem. My son has spent hours rearranging them, which surprised me—I expected them to just sit on a shelf.

    Abigail ★★★★★

I love how each little hermit crab comes with its own removable shell, so the kids can swap them around like the real crabs do. The 192-piece count means plenty for sharing at a classroom party.

    Andrew L. ★★★★★

These little guys are endlessly entertaining to watch trade shells as they grow. The set comes with a great mix of sizes and colors, so there's always a new comb
